A single queen leaf-cutter ant can live for up to 20 years and found a colony of millions of workers.
One Ant, One Flight, Twenty Years
On a specific night each year, usually after the first heavy rains of the season, something remarkable happens in the tropical forests of Central and South America. Virgin queen leafcutter ants (Atta species) emerge from their home colonies in vast numbers, take to the air in mating flights, and mate with multiple males in the space of a few hours. Each mated queen then lands, bites off her own wings โ she will never fly again โ and begins digging into the soil to found what will become one of the most complex societies on Earth.
She does this entirely alone. She carries nothing with her except the sperm stored in her spermatheca from the mating flight, sufficient to fertilize hundreds of millions of eggs over the decades ahead, and a small fragment of fungal culture held in a specialized pouch in her mouth โ the agricultural seed stock for the fungal gardens that will feed her colony for its entire existence.
Building a Colony From Nothing
The founding queen begins by excavating a small chamber and using her first eggs โ which she fertilizes using stored sperm โ to grow her initial fungal garden, supplemented by metabolizing her now-useless flight muscles and fat reserves. The first workers to emerge are tiny minims, the smallest worker caste, which begin tending the fungus and foraging for leaf material before the queen's reserves are fully depleted.
Mortality among founding queens is catastrophic. Studies of founding success in leafcutter populations show that the majority of founding queens die within the first few months โ killed by predators, by fungal pathogens invading the nascent garden, or by the physiological stress of founding under inadequate soil conditions. The queens that survive this bottleneck, however, can go on to extraordinary longevity.
Those that make it through the first years benefit from a feedback loop: a larger worker force better defends the queen, tends the fungal garden more effectively, and brings in more leaf material, which supports more fungal growth and more egg production, which grows the colony further. By the time a leafcutter colony is ten to fifteen years old, it can contain eight to ten million workers, occupy a nest that extends several meters underground, and process hundreds of kilograms of leaf material per year.
Why Queens Live So Long
The leafcutter queen's 20-year lifespan โ by far the longest of any insect species โ is the product of the same mechanisms that produce queen longevity in other social insects, operating over a longer timescale. She is fed continuously by workers, protected from physical harm by an enormous defensive force, and kept in a stable underground microclimate that buffers her from the environmental stresses that shorten the lives of workers and most other insects.
At the molecular level, queen longevity involves the same biochemical pathways associated with longevity in other animal systems: elevated antioxidant enzyme activity, reduced oxidative stress damage to proteins and DNA, and altered expression of insulin/IGF-1 signaling genes. Whether these molecular differences are themselves caused by the queen's diet and protected lifestyle, or whether they are programmed during development by the nutritional and hormonal conditions that determine queen versus worker differentiation, is an active area of research.
A Society Built Around One Individual
The implications of a 20-year queen lifespan extend beyond biology into the sociology of the colony as a whole. A mature leafcutter colony of several million workers represents an ecological force comparable to a large mammal in terms of biomass processing. The queen that founded it is, genetically, the mother of essentially all of its members โ an almost perfect reproductive monopoly maintained for two decades.
When the queen eventually dies, the colony declines. Leafcutter workers cannot reproduce and become new queens; the colony's fate is tied to the founding female who chose a patch of soil twenty years ago and began digging alone in the dark. The workers will continue their tasks for months or years after the queen's death as the colony slowly winds down, the fungal garden shrinks, and the millions of chambers gradually empty.
It is a strange kind of mortality โ not of an individual but of an entire society, precipitated by the death of one ant who, for two decades, was in one very real biological sense the entire reason for it all.
